For archivists and librarians who are interested in reproducingacademic maps, we surveyed the way in which this industry conductsbusiness. Most firms offer the complete growing range ofservice packages, including cataloging, data processing, andimage reproduction. Any of these services can be grouped around theproduction of higher quality reproductions of digital maps. A morecomplex service package often includes some form of halftoningfor the reproduction of grayscale images. Although the lower qualityequivalent images are often acceptable for distribution to wide-area users and for on-line Web download, they are often prohibitively expensive to reproduce. The higherquality ''Master Reproduction'' includes both monochrome andcolor printing; this is often the preferred option to allow for a more biancolored reproduction for some scholarly publications.Corbis prints these higher quality images on some of its older generationpresses. We can also use our own company's facilities, but currentlywe can only offer images of 10,000 by 10,000 pixels. These highquality images are capable of producing images up to20,000 by 20,000 pixels.

Finally, we have used textile printing for some publications. In thisprocess, each part of the image produces its own set of halftonedot arrays. The copies are then stitched together to form animage. The image is inspected, and areas where the stitching is poorare then removed. The copy is then applied to the garment as a singlelayer of dots. The process can be relatively inexpensive, and in someinstances the results can be quite impressive.

Our company charges a set fee for the reproduction of a map fordistribution. Although we accept payment in U.S. dollars, a number ofothers accept only the British pound. We also offer the servicecommissioning an image for a fee.
