The high impact foot traumas are the most common foot injury and are usually the result of some external force, such as the sudden stopping of a horse or rough transport. The moderate impact foot traumas are more common, but the ultimate origin of these is not so easy to determine. Some of them, such as chronic cracking, may be caused by repetitive motion over a long period of time. Others, such as sole bruising, may be the result of a stressful shoeing or hoof care situation.
If a cracked hoof is not visibly worsened by this or any other method, I would leave it alone. Some cracks are simply the result of being born with a flaw in the hoof wall. Such cracks should not be trimmed, and certainly should not be repaired.
You could try a little bit of silicone putty, as long as it is a good, non-hardening silicone putty. One can buy it at most hardware stores, and it is fairly inexpensive. I have a can of the Pink stuff, and it seems to work pretty well. It can be worked into the cracks, and although it is obviously not waterproof, it does seem to prevent water from getting in at the crack. However, I would recommend that you just be careful, and try not to get the silicone on anything else. I understand that you can use this stuff for a LOT of things, so the risk of using it is not that great, but a caution would be prudent. The only problem I had was getting it to stick to the hoof wall. It has a tendency to slide off if you do not hold it very tight. If you try to put a piece of tape around it, you will probably get the tape stuck to the putty.
