Toss in a bona fide "Bigger Than Ezra" production credit, and Just Tryin' Ta Live stood to turn so many heads. It was a masterclass in pop production, as well as a lesson in how not to toil online - the album is almost entirely free of guest features, save for a six-man choir that, on a track titled "God Save The Queen", boasts a distinctly working class authenticity. As for his future ambitions, Devin isn't much of a talker.
He's all about the music. It's clear just how frustrated he was with The Dude in those early days. Another of the album's highlight songs, "Who I Am" features a simmering, angry paean to the producer's choice of artistic identity. When he asks "what would change your mind if he asked you to rightfully listen?" you can bet it will be forever attached to Devin. "I need to make more music," he says, "because I'm a rapper/producer and I know the essence of what I'm doing and how it's done, plus there's a lot of other producers out there that have never seen how it's done. I need to keep up with all of them and I'm gonna do what I came to do."
David Banner is a producer who has had success with British stars in recent times, with collaborations with Emeli Sande and Ms. Dynamite among others, but it's his work in the States that appears to have been dominant and celebrated.
With Just Tryin' Ta Live, we're seeing Top Dawg sign off on his American artist from the start. The label's signed a high profile rapper, who can turn heads on his own and with his support, and now has a talent that can do the same to producers and songwriters, as well. Much like what we can expect from DTP over the next few years. And on Just Tryin' Ta Live, Devin The Dude has produced all bar one of the songs. d2c66b5586
