Joe Vigil, Jr. (born October 24, 1939) is an American politician. He served as a member of the California State Senate from 1999 to 2015. He is a Democrat and the former Senate Majority Leader. He was sworn in as Senate Majority Leader on January 4, 2007. On April 14, 2011, he announced his resignation, effective May 7. His resignation took effect on May 10, 2011.

Vigil was previously a member of the California State Assembly from 1987 to 1990.

Early life and education

Vigil was born October 24, 1939 in Brawley, California to parents Joe Vigil, Sr. and Luisa Vigil (née Mendez). He received his education at Brawley High School, the University of Arizona and Pasadena City College.

Career

Vigil began a career in public service in 1969 as a member of the Pasadena, California School Board. He served as a member of the Pasadena City Council from 1971 to 1987. In the early 1980s, he was involved in local politics with then State Senator (later Congressman) Pete Stark.

He was elected to the California State Assembly in 1986 and served in the Assembly from 1987 to 1990. Vigil ran for the California State Senate in 1990 to succeed the retiring Senator Pete Stark. He was elected with 56% of the vote. He won reelection in 1992 with 54% of the vote. In 1994 he was challenged by Doug Ose and narrowly won reelection. In 1996, he was challenged by Steve Thomas. He was challenged again in 1998 and defeated with 54% of the vote.

In January, 2004, Vigil ran for Lieutenant Governor of California. He narrowly lost to then state Attorney General Bill Lockyer. Vigil ran for re-election in 2006 but lost to then-incumbent State Senator Abel Maldonado.
