A Russian spacecraft has been lifted into the sky in preparation for a historic flight to Mars. The Proton-M rocket lifted off from Russia’s Baikonur cosmodrome at 10:53 GMT on Thursday with the start of a two-month journey to the red planet.

Engineers controlling the spacecraft took a few minutes to gather their nerves for the spectacular mission to take place. Moments after the rocket’s engines fired, space observers watched as it soared into the clouds. The Proton rocket had been on static display at Baikonur since February.

The craft, designed to carry a small research spacecraft named Phobos-Grunt, will make its first trip to Mars in January. Its mission is to collect samples from the moon Phobos to return to Earth. The return mission is scheduled to be launched in May.

Following the successful lift-off, the engineers were able to rest for a few hours before getting ready for an even bigger flight that is scheduled to begin on November 1. That is when the lander named Zvezda (“Glory”) will be launched with the Mars 500 crew on board.

Zvezda will be lifted to space by a Soyuz rocket, an international project with Russian, American and European partners. The crew will spend about 10 days on board the lander while it travels to Mars and collects samples of Martian soil.

Proton-M rocket has been on static display at Baikonur since February

The first space mission to Mars has been a long time coming. The red planet was discovered in 1610 by Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei, and has since become the most popular destination for space exploration.

It was the Soviet Union that sent its first spacecraft to the planet in 1965. From there, several more missions were launched, but the Soviet Union stopped sending craft to Mars in 1993. Russia began sending its own probe to the planet in 2001.
